NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday said the Centre “tacitly accepted” the M.S. Swaminathan panel recommendation while fixing the minimum support price for wheat by adding 50 per cent to the cost of production calculated by the Commission on Agricultural Costs and Prices. The same should have been done for paddy. The MSP should become an effective tool to give remunerative price to the farmer, party spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said. Big differenceThere was a huge difference in the retail price of wheat and rice, which the consumer paid, and in the MSP offered to farmers. Even if the MSP was raised substantially — the BJP has been pleading for price of paddy at Rs. 1,000 a quintal on a par with wheat — the retail price need not go up, the party said. Mr. Javadekar rejected the argument ostensibly made by the Prime Minister to senior BJP leaders when they gave him a memorandum on Wednesday.
