22 LTTE cadres killed

B. Muralidhar Reddy

COLOMBO: The Sri Lankan military on Thursday claimed that 22 LTTE cadres, two soldiers and a civilian were killed in the north even as the Air Force reported aerial attack on an LTTE “training camp” in Mullathivu district.

The Defence Ministry said the Tigers and the soldiers died in heavy fighting along the Mannar Forward Defence Lines (FDLs). It said the Tigers attempted to breach the FDLs.

The military alleged that the LTTE fired mortar shells at the Athikkuli Tamil village in Mannar killing a woman.

However, TamilNet said a young mother was killed when soldiers and Special Task Force (STF) commandos opened fire from their positions. The website said the Army and the LTTE engaged in offensive operations at two different positions.

Separately, fighter jets claimed to have pounded an LTTE training base in Mullathivu.
