MRI scan trial begins at GH

Staff Reporter

TIRUCHI: K. A. P. Viswanatham Government Medical College Hospital on Thursday began the trial run of a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner.

The equipment has been installed at the hospital at a cost of Rs.6 crore. The 1.5-tesla MRI is a high magnitude scanner, next only to that at Christian Medical College Hospital in Vellore.

The trial run would continue for about 10 days for inpatients, Dean P. Ravishankar told The Hindu.

Depending upon the parts that were scanned, the charges would range from Rs. 2,500 to Rs. 3,500. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy and magnetic resonance angiography could be done for the scanning of spinal cord, knee, joints and shoulder disorders, epilepsy and sports injuries. The scanning process would take about an hour and 10 patients would be examined every day, Dr. Ravishankar said.

Lab technicians deputed by Tamil Nadu Medical Service Corporation and paramedical staff of the hospital were being trained for a week by a technician from the German manufacturer. After obtaining a quality assurance certificate from technicians, the MRI scan facility would be open to the public.
