THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Five students of higher secondary schools (HSS) in the city got the rare honour of receiving their scholarships from President Pratibha Patil on Thursday. J. Ajith (Government HSS, Tholikode), K. Bijimol (Government HSS, Vithura), A. Mohammed Anaz (Government HSS, Kamaleswaram), Jeena Franklin (St. Mary’s HSS, Vettukad) and S. Chithra (Government Girls Vocational HSS, Pettah) were the first ones to receive the scholarships for the poor instituted by the State government. The received Rs.5000 each as scholarship. Minister for Education M.A. Baby had said that about 10,000 poor students of higher secondary and vocational higher secondary schools in the State would receive the scholarship in the comings days. Many a bouquets and mementos and awaited the President at the civic reception, where she launched the scholarship programme. Governor R.L. Bhatia, who was to present her the first bouquet, however, could not turn up for the function as he was indisposed. Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan presented a memento to her as “a gesture of affection of Kerala to the President of India.” Assembly Speaker K. Radhakrishnan and Ministers presented bouquets. Minister for Sports M. Vijayakumar presented a memento of the Department of Sports.
