IN FULL FLOW: Grand Anicut after modernisation using funds sanctioned by NABARD THANJAVUR: National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has sanctioned 547 projects under its Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) for the district, according to its assistant general manager N.V. Baskaran. The projects cover sectors such as irrigation, drip irrigation, check dams, bridges, roads, power, schools, veterinary, drinking water and health. Two irrigation projects for modernisation of head works and head sluices at the Grand Anicut (GA canal, the Cauvery, the Vennar and the Coleroon heads and sluices) and Thirukattupalli regulators with RIDF assistance of Rs.29.47 crore were sanctioned. Improvement of 270 village roads to the standards of Other District Roads and strengthening and widening of existing roads is done with RIDF assistance of Rs.67.23 crore. Forty-eight bridges at a total cost of Rs. 34.17 crore and RIDF assistance of Rs.30.15 crore had been sanctioned. They would new linkage to nearby villages for transporting agricultural produces, particularly vegetables, to the nearest market. The RIDF assistance of Rs.23.71 crore had been sanctioned for creation of additional classrooms, labs, toilets and water facilities at 56 government high and higher secondary schools. A sum of Rs.14.58 crore had been sanctioned for strengthening a 110/33 Kvt sub station and seven 33/11Kvt stations to reduce power transmission losses. Mr. Baskaran said 65 veterinary clinics had been sanctioned at a project cost of Rs.2.48 crore and RIDF assistance of Rs.2.36 crore. Forty-six projects had been sanctioned for drinking water supply and augmentation of groundwater for drinking water supply in rural areas at a cost of Rs.1.94 crore and RIDF assistance of Rs.1.58 crore. “Benefits envisaged in the projects are increase in agriculture production due to improved access for agricultural inputs and services, better price realisation for agricultural produces due to improved market access, reduction in wastages, especially perishable agriculture commodities during transport due to improved road conditions, generation of non-recurring and recurring employment in rural areas and savings on vehicle operating cost including fuel and wear and tear,” he said.
