Special teachers must be a role model: Karur Collector

Staff Reporter

KARUR: Special teachers and trainers involved in imparting inclusive education to special children should be a role model in dedicated service, Collector T.N. Venkatesh has said.

Inaugurating a capacity building workshop for special teachers and trainers working under the Inclusive Education concept of Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) here recently, Mr. Venkatesh said the “privileged teachers” should re-dedicate themselves to the cause of the physically and mentally challenged children under their care.

They should understand that they were not just teaching children but were breathing life into the special children. The responsibility set them apart from other regular teachers.

Pointing out that ‘Inclusive Education’ had evolved into education for children with special needs, Mr. Venkatesh said that through screening camps, conducted in all eight panchayat unions of Karur district, a total of 1,739 children under the age of 18 had been identified as physically or mentally challenged needing education. Of them, 377 were aurally challenged, 231 visually affected, 422 orthopaedically challenged, 590 mentally ill or retarded and 119 were otherwise affected.

Equipment procured

A sum of Rs.21 lakh was sanctioned during the current year under SSA for procuring equipment for the benefit of the special children and for imparting education to them. Out of that fund, 17 children received treatment for various ailments, while cleft lip rehabilitation procedure and other rehabilitative measures would be undertaken. A total of Rs.1.64 lakh would be spent on the process, Mr. Venkatesh said. Through the special camps, over 740 special children were issued identity cards.

Over 100 special children would be taken on an educational and recreational tour to Anna Science Planetarium, Tiruchi, and other picnic spots. Already, a tour was arranged in which over 50 children participated.

Chief Education Officer (SSA), Pon. Kumar, District Rehabilitation Officer C. Jasmine, District Coordinator Swaminathan and Director Bharivalayah were among those who spoke.
