‘BJP leaders will decide on letter’

Special Correspondent

State BJP has not got any letter from the JD(S): Suresh Kumar’

BANGALORE: The Bharatiya Janata Party State unit on Thursday said its central unit would take an appropriate decision on the letter by Janata Dal (Secular) leader H. D. Deve Gowda.

Party spokesperson S. Suresh Kumar told The Hindu that the BJP State unit had not received such a letter and that it had come to know about it only through the media.

“The letter has been addressed to our national president Rajanath Singh. The party central unit might reply to the letter. But so far our central leaders have not discussed the issue with us,” Mr. Kumar said.

He declined to comment on the 12 conditions imposed by Mr. Gowda in the letter. However, he said that “the party State unit would go by the power-sharing pact that was entered between the two parties about 21 months ago.”

‘No confusion’

A senior BJP functionary said Mr. Gowda’s letter had not created any confusion in the party regarding its moves to form the government.

“His letter does not have any legal standing or legal bearing on the coalition’s moves to form the government and the decision to be taken by Governor on whether to invite us to form the government. The letter is only a political step and not a legal step,” he maintained.

Meanwhile, the BJP is set to hold a meeting of its MLAs in Bangalore on Friday.

At the meeting, the party is expected to take stock of the political developments and also finalise the nature of its proposed rally scheduled to be organised in Bangalore on November 5.

In the wake of the present political developments, the party might take a decision on whether to hold a rally or protest by its legislators.

The party has already directed all its MLAs to camp in Bangalore in view of its plans to meet the President Pratibha Patil to parade the legislators.

The party is holding protests at the district centres on Friday and Saturday against the delay by Governor Rameshwar Thakur to invite its leader B. S. Yeddyurappa to form the government.
