CHENNAI: Chief Justice of Madras High Court A.P. Shah on Thursday said he was confident that in the near future the Union would be able to introduce a single integrated scheme of levy of taxes on goods and services.
Speaking at the silver jubilee celebrations of Customs, Excise and Service Tax Appellate Tribunal (CESTAT), South Zonal Bench here, organised by The Indirect Taxes Bar Association (ITBA) and The Revenue Bar Association, he said several economists strongly advocated integration of taxes on goods and services imposed by the State and the Union. This might involve the sensitive issues pertaining to federalism. “But, I am confident that in the near future, the Union would be able to introduce a single integrated scheme of levy of taxes on goods and services.”
The Chief Justice said ‘services’ constituted a heterogeneous spectrum of economic activities.
The sector now occupied the economy’s centre stage. The growth of the sector at a higher rate offered tremendous revenue potential to the Government. It was expected that in due course, service tax would reduce the tax burden on international trade (customs duty) and domestic manufacturing sector (excise duty).
Madras High Court Judge R. Sudhakar; president, ITBA, C. Natarajan; former vice-president, S. Kalyanam; and CESTAT Members P.G.Chacko and P. Karthikeyan offered felicitations.
