Vigil tightened to check flow of ‘seconds liquor’

K.T. Sangameswaran

CHENNAI: With Deepavali just a week away, the enforcement wing of the police has strengthened vigil to check the flow of ‘seconds liquor’ and requested the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation to make available sufficient quantities of low-priced and fast-moving liquor brands in IMFL outlets.

The police fear that if sufficient quantities of liquor varieties are not available in retail shops, especially during the festival season, consumers will go in for illicit arrack, including rectified spirit, seconds and spurious liquor.

Besides the possible danger to health that will be caused by illicit liquor, offtake of available brands will come down.

Still worse is the possibility of anti-social elements taking advantage of the situation and supplying methanol to the poor.

Shortage

The police say on many occasions in the past, there was shortage of low-priced popular brands in the shops. They have also drawn the attention of the Corporation to some staff diluting liquor with water.

G. Thilakavathi, Additional Director-General of Police, Enforcement, has instructed personnel and officers attached to the Prohibition Enforcement Wing to prevent the flow of illicit liquor.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police E. Ma. Masanamuthu told The Hindu that at a meeting of officials of Puducherry and Tamil Nadu a week ago, a request was made to take steps to check the smuggling of IMFL from the Union Territory to Tamil Nadu.

It was found that out of the 10,223 bottles of illicit liquor seized in the State in August, a majority were from Puducherry.
