A book to refine rough draft of history
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: Newspapers document what has been called the rough draft of history.
In ‘Writing a Nation,’ an anthology of articles culled from India’s English language press since 1947, The Hindu’s Joint Editor Nirmala Lakshman aims to refine that draft.
Introducing the book at its Chennai launch on Thursday, N. Ravi, Editor, The Hindu, said: “The collection provides a snapshot of the leading issues that have engaged the attention of the Indian public over the decades.”
An effective defence
He held up the anthology as an effective defence of Indian journalism against the rising charges of inaccuracy, sensationalism and bias.
“Nirmala’s collection will serve as a powerful antidote to such negative sentiments…
“She has presented the virtuous face of journalism and brought out its contribution to the national discourse in full measure,” he said. The book was released by Governor Surjit Singh Barnala. The first copy was presented to historian S. Muthiah.
The Governor said reading the book would give one “a bird’s eye view of the vibrant aspects of Indian polity.”
