Three held for attack on Krishnasswamy

C. Jaishankar

It could be a case of mistaken identity, says ADGP

RAMANATHAPURAM: Three persons have been arrested in connection with the attack on Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president M. Krishnasswamy at Keezha Kanniseri near Mudukulathur on Monday night.

Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) K. Vijay Kumar said investigation so far revealed it was not planned and could be a case of mistaken identity.

Speaking to The Hindu at Paramakudi near here on Thursday, Mr. Vijay Kumar said K. Malaimegu (42) and U. Ramalingam (35) from Vilankalathur and A. Muniasamy (42) of Keezha Kanniseri had been arrested.

He said all aspects of the case would be thoroughly probed. Though some of the culprits had disappeared from their villages, efforts were on to nab them. Special parties had been sent to various places to find their hideouts. “It seems that it is a case of mistaken identity. We have collected some inputs. We are on the job of corroborating them.”

When his attention was drawn to the charge that there had been intelligence failure, Mr. Vijay Kumar said Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had already commented on it. He, however, said departmental action would be taken against police personnel involved in providing security if there was dereliction of duty.

On the murder of Vincent Samson, a Dalit, Mr. Vijay Kumar said A. Shanmugam (33) of Mudukulathur had been arrested.

“Under control”

Terming the situation in the district “under control and stable,” the ADGP, who visited several areas of the district, said there was no untoward incident on Wednesday. “A foolproof security arrangement is in place in various parts of the district. Fifteen companies of Tamil Nadu Special Police and several battalions of armed reserve police have been deployed.”

Bus services remained suspended for the third day on the Mudukulathur-Sikkal route and surrounding villages.
