MDMK activists observe fast

Staff Reporter

POLLACHI: Hundreds of cadres of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), led by party general secretary Vaiko, on Thursday observed a day-long fast here, protesting against the transfer of the 79-km Kinathukadavu-Pollachi-Palakkad line to Palakkad railway division, on the inaugural day of the Salem division.

Wearing a black shirt, Mr. Vaiko said his party welcomed the formation of the Salem division but opposed the Centre’s decision to give away Kinathukadavu and Pollachi areas to Palakkad for appeasing “warring” Kerala over the bifurcation. Clarifying that he was not against the people of Kerala, Mr. Vaiko said his party would not accept giving away any part of Tamil Nadu’s territory to the Palakkad division.

Blaming Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi for agreeing to the move, Mr. Vaiko said his party would continue its agitation till the goal was achieved.

He said the Centre had done “injustice” to the people of Pollachi and took the decision without consulting Pollachi MP C. Krishnan. The stretch should be retained with Madurai or Salem division so as to speed up gauge conversion and other developmental works.
