MSP: Rajasekhara Reddy to convince Manmohan

Special Correspondent

Says Government committed to welfare of farmers

Deplores “obstacles” in irrigation projects

Plan to enact legislation to protect Christian property

HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy said that he would personally try to convince Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to concede hike in minimum support price (MSP) for paddy on a par with wheat.

He would impress upon Dr. Singh the need to enhance the rate so that the farmers got adequate fruits for their toil, Dr. Reddy said, while addressing a gathering at the A.P. Formation Day celebrations here on Thursday.

Asserting that his Government was committed to farmers’ welfare, he said he had written a letter to the Prime Minister seeking higher MSP for paddy as soon as the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices submitted its recommendations to the Centre in September.

As the desired result was not achieved, he wrote a more detailed letter to Dr. Singh on October 18 to mount pressure on the Centre.

Dr. Reddy said the Government was considering enactment of legislation to protect Christian properties.

It would strive hard to ensure welfare of all sections of people and development of all regions in the State. “We dedicate ourselves to the all-round development of the State as desired by leaders when the State was formed 51 years ago.”

The Chief Minister deplored the obstacles being placed by various forces to the irrigation projects taken up by the Government. At best, these forces could delay the projects but could not stop them.

The projects would be completed at any cost as desired by the people.

Song and dance

An impressive parade by contingents of police, including horse riding personnel, and a colourful song and dance programme by school children eulogising the glory of the State marked the celebrations at NTR stadium. Group singing of “Maa Telugu Talliki” song was an added attraction.
