Nithari: court notice to CBI

Legal Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday issued notice to the Central Bureau of Investigation on a writ petition filed by a woman, whose daughter was a victim of the Nithari serial killings, alleging that the CBI was trying to shield Maninder Singh Pandher, key accused.

The petition was filed by Bandana Sarkar, whose daughter Pinki was allegedly raped and murdered by Pandher and his servant, Surinder Singh Koli.

She alleged that her husband Jatin Sarkar, who had the confessional statements of Pandher, was murdered to protect the guilty.

The Bench of Justices B.N. Agrawal, P.P. Naolekar and D.K. Jain also issued notice to the Centre and the U.P. and West Bengal governments on the petition that sought protection to her and others.

The petitioner said her husband was found dead under mysterious circumstances in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district on September 1, about nine days before his deposition before the Special CBI court in Noida.

She said he was murdered as he filed an application before the court when the CBI gave a clean chit to Pandher.

The court took note of the application and directed the CBI to conduct a probe.

The petitioner said CBI officials made threatening phone calls to her husband asking him not to pursue the complaint against Pandher.

Her husband lodged a complaint in this regard with the Sihani Gate police station in Ghaziabad but the police did not register any FIR. She then sent a registered letter to the SP, Murshidabad but no action was taken so far.

She sought a direction to the respondents to protect her other key witnesses.
