PUDUCHERRY: This hour-long training programme may be an oft-repeated one. However, at mid-sea, it would come in handy to help a fisherman in need.

The Coast Guard on Tuesday conducted a training programme for fishermen of Veerampattinam and taught them how to use walkie-talkies, provide first aid in case of emergency, and to use life jackets and life buoys.

Personnel from the Coast Guard station in Puducherry embarked on a journey to the fishermen village as part of their “Community Interaction Programme” and imparted lessons on safety measures to be taken while they are at sea. The thrust of the training programme was to highlight how life jackets and life buoys can be used. The personnel explained how to cling to the buoys for hours.

The Coast Guard personnel also conducted a demonstration on how to use a walkie-talkie. Pamphlets carrying Coast Guard toll free number 1554 were distributed to the fishermen.

The programme was conducted now as it was during the monsoon period that majority of the accidents at sea occurred, Commandant Arun Saxena, Commanding Officer, Coast Guard Station in Puducherry, told reporters.

A majority of the fishing boats in Puducherry were not registered and it caused difficulty in locating the fishermen at time of distress, he said adding that the Coast Guard had appraised the Fisheries Department to make mandatory the registration of boats.
