PUDUKOTTAI: The importance of Tamil music as a tool for reflecting the culture and civilisation of the Tamils was underlined at the inauguration of the ‘Tamizh Isai Sangam’ here on Thursday. Speakers said Tamil language was propagated only through its classical music form available in literary works such as ‘Tholkappiam’ and the works of the Sangam era.
Finance Minister K. Anbazhagan, who inaugurated the Sangam, said music had its roots in the Tamil language. Pointing out how the three original forms of Tamil language — ‘iyal,’ ‘isai’ and ‘koothu’ — got transformed into ‘iyal’ ‘isai’ and ‘nataka’ categories, he appealed to the Sangam’s office-bearers to organise quality programmes every year to promote Tamil music.
