Plan to protect ‘Nagarathar’ homes

Staff Reporter

PUDUKOTTAI: With Deepavali proving to be a family get-together for the ‘Nagarathar’ community in Ponnamaravathy, the police plan to evolve an action plan to check break-ins at their heritage houses.

A few villages in and around Ponnamaravathy are noted for the architectural beauty of the heritage houses. With thick walls and spacious halls, each house has several compartments. Since the owners have settled in Bangalore, Chennai and other cities, the houses stay locked. A few incidents of burglary attempts have been reported at the houses in the last several months.

The police consider the annual gathering of the community as the most opportune time to sensitise them on the need to take preventive measures.

Superintendent of Police Kapil Kumar C. Saratkar said his visit to the village was aimed at creating confidence among the residents. He also explained the steps taken by the police to protect their property through special night patrols. He also advised them to cooperate with the police. Surveillance was being maintained on persons with suspicious movement. Additional personnel had been posted in the area.

Mr. Saratkar advised jewellery merchants in the village to appoint watchmen.
