Defunct crematorium to be operational soon

Staff Reporter

BHUBANESWAR: It has been five years since the capital city has been managing without an electric crematorium. But the wait may end soon. The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to appoint a consultant to evolve a mechanism to make the only electric crematorium at Satya Nagar area operational through public private partnership (PPP).

“This is a basic urban need. The corporation has already resolved to make the defunct crematorium operational. Within a month, we are going to invite expression of interest from different agencies, who will give us a proper model to execute the plan,” BMC Commissioner Aparajita Sarangi said here on Friday.

It had become unmanageable because the electric consumption for cremating bodies soared exponentially, Ms. Sarangi said.

Elaborating on the detail strategy that the BMC was contemplating to put in place for development of crematorium at Satya Nagar, local corporator Rajendra Acharya said, “we are trying to take up the crematorium as well as unutilised land for development as a whole.”

Costly affair

He said the crematorium ran into losses largely because the electric coil, which was a substandard, was taking hours together to get heated and subsequently it became costly affair.

“We are having two acres of land adjacent to the crematorium. The building is already there so as the water supply system. Electric transformer can be set up when is required. We only need to replace the electric plate,” Mr. Acharya said.

The BMC was looking to develop a swimming pool for training purposes, skating track and health club in the vacant space.

“The revenue to be generated from the units can easily supplement to the fund required for running the electric crematorium. The corporation has already approved the schemes in previous meetings.”

Moreover, the burial for Muslim community would also get a facelift.
