‘We demand’: Members of Communist Party of India ( Marxist) staging a road blockade supporting Arunthathiyar community’s demands. SALEM: Members of Communist Party of India (Marxist) staged a road blockade in front of the Collectorate here on Friday in support of the charter of demands of Arunthathiyar community submitted by the party to the State government. Members called for stringent measures to end manual scavenging and asked the government to provide a sub-quota for the Arunthathiars. The government should fix a minimum wage for those working in the graveyards and crematoriums. Members urged the government to provide free land and house sites to Arunthathiyars, who were still living in poor conditions. Concrete measures should be taken up to improve the socio-economic condition of people belonging to the community, they said. The party also demanded that a memorial be set up for Ondiveeran, Muthan, Kandan and Potti, who played a vital role in the battles launched against the British. Members appealed to the Sate government to fulfil all the demands in the memorandum submitted by the party to the Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi during a rally held in Chennai on June 12 this year. Police arrested the agitators and restored the traffic.
