World of books: M.T. Vasudevan Nair, writer, inaugurating an international book festival in Kozhikode on Friday. Kozhikode: Discussions on “the death of book” began in the early 1960s because of the rapidly rising popularity and reach of theatre and television and have been fuelled more recently by the technological revolution brought about by the Internet, M.T. Vasudevan Nair, writer, has said. “However, the tribe of avid readers of good books has not declined. May their tribe increase.” The author was inaugurating an international book festival of the Kerala State Bhasha Institute here on Friday. He said festivals for sale of two commodities were being regularly held across the State. These were to market gold jewellery and books. The demand for books was a welcome sign, the Jnanpith laureate said. The festival will be on till November 11 on the Vaikkom Mohammed Basheer grounds at Arayidathupalam. Cultural programmes featuring writers drawn from within the country and abroad will be held. These include the Dr. K.M. George Memorial Oration by K. Satchithanandan, poet, on Saturday; a symposium on “Poetry of the marginalised” to be inaugurated by Sugathakumari and a discussion on film and culture on Sunday; an educational conference and honouring the Hindustani singer Sarachandra Marathe on Monday; and a discussion on “Woman in changing Kerala” on November 10.
