Case against Srivai panchayat chief

VILLUPURAM: Cases have been booked against Srivai panchayat president M. Muthukrishnan and 82 others on charges of causing disquiet, damage to property and carrying out physical attacks on Friday.

The police said 13 houses were ransacked and at least six persons were assaulted on Thursday.

Two groups–one led by Mr. Muthukrishnan and another by P. Irusan–had been at loggerheads ever since the local body elections were held.

Mr. Muthukrishnan alleged that he had received threatening calls forcing him to quit the post or face the consequences.

He claimed that the assailants had damaged the official telephone and records kept in his house. Strong police force has been deployed in the village. — Special Correspondent
