Steps to settle surplus revenue land cases soon

Staff Reporter

MALAPPURAM: Minister for Revenue K.P. Rajendran said here on Friday that special efforts would be made to settle all cases related to surplus revenue land within a year. About 25,000 such cases were currently pending in various courts, including the Supreme Court, he said.

Mr. Rajendran said that much of the surplus land was in the Eranad taluk of Malappuram district, followed by Taliparamba and Manathavady taluks.

According to him, the failure of the Land Use Board in holding frequent sittings was the reason for such a large number of pending cases about surplus land.

Two sittings

The Minister said the Land Use Board was being reconstituted and the list of members would be announced in three weeks. The new board will hold at least two sittings a year, he said.

He said the Land Use Board secretary had been asked to furnish a report about the surplus land in the Eranad taluk.

The Minister said Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh would be invited to inaugurate the new block of Alappat Taluk Hospital, which was being constructed with the money donated by Maharashtra government.

Mr. Rajendran assured that there would be no forced acquisition of land for the development of Calicut International Airport at Karipur.

The land will be taken only after ensuring rehabilitation of the people, he said.

Addressing a review meeting of the tsunami rehabilitation project earlier at the Collectorate here, Mr. Rajendran said that rehabilitation would be completed by April 2009.

He said Rs.47.5 crore was being spent in the health sector for tsunami rehabilitation in the district. As much as Rs.9 crore was being spent for sea-wall construction, he said.
