Bangalore: The letter written by Janata Dal (Secular) president H.D. Deve Gowda putting 12 conditions to the senior leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party in New Delhi for supporting the coalition headed by its leader B.S. Yeddyurappa in the State has triggered strong reactions in the Karnataka unit of the Congress. Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president M. Mallikarjun Kharge told The Hindu that the letter showed that Mr. Gowda had apprehensions about the dangerous implications of the anti-minority agenda of the BJP, which was echoed by the Congress. He said that Mr. Gowda and his son, the former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, had attacked the BJP and Mr. Yeddyurappa stating that the minorities in the State were not safe during the 20-month rule by the coalition and the latter had even explained the mistakes of the BJP in an advertisement, a week ago. Many incidents that happened during their rule proved Mr. Gowda`s apprehensions, he said. Taking exception to the demand by Mr. Gowda that the government should consult him and his party in transfer of officials and that there should be a coordination committee of the two parties for running the government, Mr. Kharge said it did not augur well for the State and the people. About the condition by Mr. Gowda that the coalition arrangement would end if the Lok Sabha was dissolved and that each of the coalition partners could withdraw support forcing mid-term elections, the Congress leader said that the Janata Dal (Secular) president seemed to think that he should have the last word on all issues. Mr. Kharge, who had written a letter to Union Minister of State and Karnataka in-charge Prithviraj Chavan explaining the apprehensions expressed by Mr. Gowda and the extra-constitutional authority he wanted to exercise over the BJP if it was allowed to form a government, said that he had reiterated the State unit’s demand that elections should be held for the Assembly.
