NEW DELHI: A special court for electricity-related cases at Wazirpur here has convicted and sentenced three persons to imprisonment for power theft. Two of the accused were awarded rigorous imprisonment for one year, while the third was sentenced to three years’ rigorous imprisonment. In the first case, Vijay Sunar of Budh Vihar in North Delhi was sentenced to three years’ rigorous imprisonment and a civil liability of Rs.6 lakh was determined in favour of NDPL. The accused was booked in January 2005 for direct theft of electricity. In two other cases, Mohammed Ijaaz and Mohammed Tajeem of Civil Lines and Ashok Vihar, respectively, were convicted for direct theft of electricity. Ijaaz was found pilfering a total connected load of 13.12 kW for domestic use and for running “dhobi” services. The theft assessment amounted to over Rs.4 lakh. Tajeem of Ashok Vihar was booked for direct theft of 12.63 kW of electricity. He was running a moulding unit by illegally tapping the NDPL main line. The theft assessment amounted to over Rs.4 lakh. NDPL has urged all its consumers who suspect their meters to be faulty or tampered with to avail themselves of the benefit of the amnesty scheme which is applicable till November 15.
