BBMP told to come out with vehicle parking policy

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: Governor Rameshwar Thakur on Friday directed the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to come out with a motor vehicle parking policy based on public private partnership (PPP) model to tackle the large-scale parking problem in the city.

He also directed the BBMP officials to expedite the road widening works to ensure a smooth flow of traffic.

Mr. Thakur reviewed the functioning of the BBMP in the morning at the Vidhana Soudha and later in the evening held a meeting with his advisers at Raj Bhavan to approve some of the proposals of the BBMP.

Sources in the Raj Bhavan told The Hindu that the Government has approved a proposal to widen the congested Bellary Road in the city and has permitted acquisition of the requisite lands. The Bellary road leads to the Devanahalli international airport, which is due for commissioning in April next.

BBMP Commissioner S. Subramanya made a detailed presentation on traffic, garbage disposal and road widening works in the city. He highlighted the financial and land acquisition constraints faced by the corporation to take up works.

The Governor suggested to the BBMP to draw long-term and short-term strategies to address the infrastructure bottlenecks. In view of the increased number of vehicles in the city, he suggested to the officials to draft the motor vehicle parking policy on PPP model. He also suggested the officials to identify private plots to park vehicles.

The BBMP Commissioner told The Hindu that he informed the Government that the corporation had identified 13 locations (700 acres) located in different parts of the city for garbage disposal. The BBMP identified 85 roads (114 km) for widening.
