VELLORE: Public Works Department Minister Durai Murugan inaugurated Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital opened jointly with Aruna Eye Hospital here on Friday.

He said that the hospital had helped the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government in implementing the eyesight scheme under which rural people were screened and provided spectacles.

G. Viswanathan, Chancellor of VIT University, urged the Medical Council of India to take steps to facilitate the setting up of more medical colleges in India to produce adequate doctors to take care of the burgeoning population. India had only 250 medical colleges, which produced 30,000 doctors every year, whereas the country produced 5.85 lakh engineers every year, he said.

While there were 350 doctors for every one lakh population in the U.S., there were only 50 doctors for every one lakh population in India. The MCI therefore has to take steps to set right the imbalance, Mr. Viswanathan said. Amar Agarwal, Joint Managing Director, Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital Limited said that the hospital started one centre - a full-fledged eye hospital - every 24 days. By December, it would have started 25 centres in India. It conducted 27 free eye camps every month. “We will try to eradicate blindness as much as possible,” he said.

Sreenivasulu, proprietor of Aruna Eye Hospital and Medical Director of Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital said that the intention of starting an eye hospital in Vellore was to provide modern eye care to the people of the district. People need no longer go to Chennai for treatment, he said.

K.M. Khader Mohideen, Vellore MP, said that the government should explore the possibility of enabling leading hospitals impart medical education and produce doctors in order to meet the healthcare needs of the people. C. Gnanasekharan, Vellore MLA, requested the government to increase the number of seats in postgraduate courses in the medical colleges in order to meet the demand for certain disciplines such as radio diagnosis. He requested Mr. Viswanathan to start a medical college under the VIT University.

Nandakumar, manager, Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital, Vellore branch, proposed a vote of thanks.

Dr. Amar Agarwal said the hospital performed 700 free surgeries every month through the 27 free eye camps it conducted, at the rate of almost one every day, in different parts of the country. The hospital had invested Rs.5.6 crore in its Vellore branch, he said.
