‘Isai Vendhar’ awards presented

CHENNAI: ‘Isai Vendhar’ awards of ChennaiOnline were presented to vocalist S.P. Ramh, violinist Pakala Ramadas, mridangam artist J. Vaidyanathan and kanjira artist Papanasam Sethuraman here on Thursday. ‘Natya Natchathram’ title was given Lavanya Ananth.

The awardees, who were selected by a committee of four members, received the awards from noted flautist N. Ramani. S.P. Ramh, a disciple of violin maestro Lalgudi Jayaraman, is an accomplished vocalist and veena artist.

He is an ‘A’ Grade vocal and veena artist in All India Radio.

Pakala Ramadas hails from Andhra Pradesh and his father Pakala Munirathnam was a violin vidwan . Mr.Ramadas received initial training from P.P. Somayajulu and later, from violinist Lalgudi Jayaraman.

He is an assistant professor at Kalakshetra, Chennai.

J. Vaidyanathan, son of veteran musician (late) D.K. Jayaraman, learnt mridangam from T.K. Murthi and has widely travelled with eminent musicians.

Papanasam Sethuraman is a disciple of Mayavaram Somasundaram. He is a ‘B’ high grade artist in the AIR. He also plays the mridangam.

Lavanya Ananth is an exponent of the Vazhuvoor school of dance. An ‘A’grade artist with Doordarshan, she has performed throughout India and abroad. She is an empanelled artist of the Indian Council for Cultural Research.

Prizes were also given away to winners of the Carnatic music vocal and instrumental competitions conducted by ChennaiOnline in October.

ChennaiOnline managing director L. Ravichandran said it was the first web site to put the music festival online and conducted a music festival last year.
