CNG to cross borders on highways

Sujay Mehdudia

“Mobile CNG filling” along Delhi-Agra and Delhi-Chandigarh routes planned

There is no dearth of supply of gas

It will be a hit with people as CNG is cheaper

NEW DELHI: Seeking to spread the eco-friendly Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) beyond Delhi’s borders, Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) is planning to introduce “Mobile CNG Dispensing” along the Delhi-Agra and Delhi-Chandigarh national highways.

“We are looking for strategic partners to spread our wings beyond the Delhi borders for the CNG as well as Piped Natural Gas (PNG). We are looking at building small CNG corridors along the national highways so that people travelling from Delhi to nearby townships within 500 km are able to commute on natural gas rather than opting for petrol or diesel,” says IGL Managing Director Om Narayan.

Stating that it is time to take further the CNG revolution that had contributed a lot to improving the environment in Delhi, Mr. Narayan said the Mobile CNG Dispensing scheme along the national highways was a feasible idea that was being actively debated for implementation. “We could depute mobile CNG loaded vehicles that could be stationed along the highway for filling the vehicles. We could also think along the lines of opening up retail outlets along the national highways for a faster expansion. It would be a big hit with the people as CNG is cheaper to other fuels,” he added.

Vast pipeline network

Mr. Narayan said the vast gas pipeline network of its parent company, the Gas Authority of India Limited, would ensure that there is no dearth of supply and small linkages could help spread the network faster.

He also informed that after Agra and Lucknow, PNG was being introduced in Ghaziabad from next year. The company was also looking favourably at spreading its wings to Sonepat, Panipat and Greater Noida.“We have got all the required clearances from the Haryana Government and we shall go ahead with the expansion project next year,” he added.

Stating that competition was growing and IGL had to keep pace with changing times, Mr. Narayan said the company was open to joint ventures and alliances even with private sector players.
