Congress team in Delhi seeking Assembly dissolution

S. Rajendran

Governor to submit report to President today

Prakash discusses political developments with Governor

Bangalore: A delegation of Congress leaders from Karnataka on Friday called on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil and the Congress general secretary in-charge of Karnataka Prithiviraj Chavan and sought the dissolution of the Legislative Assembly.

Governor Rameshwar Thakur is slated to submit a comprehensive report on the political developments in the State to President Pratibha Patil and the Prime Minister on Saturday.

The State Congress leaders told The Hindu that the Prime Minister had told them that he was awaiting the Governor’s report and the next step would be according to the constitutional guidelines.

The Congress leaders have also sought appointments with the All India Congress Committee president Sonia Gandhi, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Law Minister H .R. Bharadwaj to impress upon them that the Union Government should refrain from giving its nod to what they termed an “unholy political combination comprising the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Janata Dal (Secular) which would end up in providing an unstable government.”

The Congress leaders have carried a detailed memorandum drafted by president of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee M. Mallikarjun Kharge, which was submitted on Thursday to the Governor.

In another development on Friday, the former Deputy Chief Minister, M.P. Prakash called on the Governor and discussed the political developments in the State. Mr. Prakash has, however, made it clear to Mr. Deve Gowda that he would remain in the mainstream of the Janata Dal (Secular) but would not be part of a BJP-led Government in case the President’s Rule was revoked and the Governor invited B.S. Yeddyurappa to form a government.
