Tension prevails among MLCs TRS members are a disappointed lot HYDERABAD: The draw of lots here on Friday came as a disappointment for 18 Congress Members of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council as it resulted in curtailment of their tenure to just two years. They were among the 29 MLCs elected by the MLAs and Local Authorities Constituencies (LACs) who will now retire in April 2009 after serving a two-year term against the normal six year tenure of members of the Upper House. Amid palpable tension among the MLCs about their political fate, Legislature Secretary K. Tuljanand Singh drew the lots in the Jubilee in the presence of Election Commission of India Principal Secretary A. K. Majumdar by the Legislature Secretary K. Tuljanand Singh to determine as to who among the 87 members would serve two, four and six year terms. The draw decided that Council Chairman A. Chakrapani and Deputy Chairman Md Jani would serve four year terms, while the Leader of the Opposition Dadi Veerabhadra Rao got a six year term. The Telugu Desam Party was rather fortunate as the tenure of none of its members was curtailed to two years. Disappointed lotTelangana Rashtra Samiti members were, however, a disappointed lot as two out of its three members including floor leader K. Dileep Kumar and H. A. Rahman will retire after two year term. Veteran CPI leader Puvvada Nageswara Rao got four-year term along with Kasani Gyaneswar, who won with the support of rebel TRS legislators. Senior Congress veterans such as Palvai Goverdhan Reddy, K. R.Amos, Singam Basavapunnaiah, M.Manik Rao and Kanimuri Bapiraju, all elected by the MLAs got a two-year term. Eight Congress MLCs out of the ten elected from LACs got two-year term. Noted educationist Chukka Ramaiah got a six-year term while Dr. K. Nageswar will retire in 2009.
