Earl Atlee, former Prime Minister of Britain, has expressed the view that the issue whether India will remain democratic or go communist will be largely influenced by the adequacy or otherwise of British and American economic and technical aid for her Five-Year Plan. Writing in the November issue of the British monthly The English Speaking World, Earl Atlee described India as “the most important bulwark of freedom and democracy” among the great mass of people in South-East Asia and said it may well be that India today is at the crossroads.
