On dowry

The article “IT revolution and declining dowry practice” (Oct. 28) does not give any figures to indicate that the dowry practice is indeed on the decline.

Secondly, it gives no data to prove that the practice is on the decline in those States where the IT revolution has taken place compared to the States which still lag behind in the sector. In the absence of these, the article is nothing more than speculation.

Kamesh Kompella,

Foster City, California

The IT industry has no doubt boosted the economy and acted as a catalyst for the rising salary standards of other industries. However, its impact on all other areas — be it job satisfaction or attitude of the younger generation, work culture and food habits — has been negative.

As far as dowry is concerned, the IT revolution has shown the way. It has demonstrated that earning a dowry which was done earlier only through a degree in medicine or engineering has now become easier by landing a plum job in the IT sector where the investment is also much lower.

M.D.K. Subramanian,

Tenkasi
