16 policemen killed in Maoist ambush
Staff Reporter
KHAMMAM: Sixteen policemen, including six CRPF jawans, were killed and five injured as CPI (Maoist) cadres ambushed a special party in Pamedu police station limits, some 22 km from the Taliperu project in Andhra Pradesh, in Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh around 4.30 p.m. on Friday
The police party was on its way to receive a team of department officials coming from Gollapalli with money drawn for salary disbursement. As the policemen were nearing Tippapuram village, they were ambushed by about 100 naxalites. Only five members of the party managed to escape. They were, however, injured. The police and the civil administration were busy with the visit of a Minister as part of the Chhattisgarh State formation day celebrations at Bijapur. Pamedu is one of the poorly connected pockets in Bastar and the local police station were attacked by the naxalites in 2002. Both public and the police in Pamedu depend on supplies from the market in Charla village to meet their daily requirement.
