Double delight for Vikas, Rachana

TENNIS / Suraj, Swetha win under-12 crowns

Mysore: It was an evening of double delight for the unseeded local lad Vikas Hansoge and the second-seeded Rachana R. Gowda in the AITA Talent Series tennis tournament for juniors played at the Raghuveer Tennis Club courts here on Friday.

Vikas capped his dream run with a 7-6(4), 5-7, 6-3 victory over the fifth-seeded S. Karan in the boys’ under-16 title clash.

The first set was evenly contested and the games went on serve. However, an erratic Karan messed up in the tie-breaker and Vikas went on to take the set.

Strong comeback

In the second, Karan made a strong comeback with some excellent forehand shots as Vikas erred by trying to slow down the pace. However, the final set saw Vikas return to his consistent best and he broke Karan in the fourth and sixth games to clinch the set and match.

Vikas then partnered Rohit Srinath to win the under-16 doubles crown, beating Ganga Singh and Surjit Singh 6-7(4), 6-4, 10-8.

Rachana shocked the top-seeded U.M. Shalaka 6-2, 7-5 to bag the girls’ under-16 title. Rachana, combining with Shalaka, romped to a 6-1, 6-1 win over P. Sindoora and P. Sudheera to complete a double.

The unseeded Suraj R. Prabodh surprised the top-seeded Jude Raymond 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 to win the boys’ under-12 crown. In the girls’ section, S. Swetha bagged the title beating S.P. Ritu 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Boys under-16: Singles: Vikas Hansoge (Kar) bt S. Karan (Kar) 7-6(4), 5-7, 6-3; Doubles: Vikas & Rohit Srinath (Kar) bt Ganga Singh & Surjit Singh (Kar) 6-7(4), 6-4, 10-8.

Girls under-16: Singles: Rachana R. Gowda (Kar) bt U.M. Shalaka (Kar) 6-2, 7-5; Doubles: Rachana & Shalaka (Kar) bt P. Sindoora & P. Sudheera (AP) 6-1, 6-1.

Boys under-12: Suraj R. Prabodh (Kar) bt Jude Raymond (AP) 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.

Girls under-12: S. Swetha (TN) bt S.P. Ritu (Kar) 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
