Barabati stadium to get a major facelift soon

Correspondent

OCA will develop it at a cost of Rs. 50 crores

Cuttack will one of the venues for ODI in March

Sitting capacity will be increased to 50,000

CUTTACK: Barabati stadium here is set for some more infrastructure development as Orissa Cricket Association (OCA), the richest sporting body of the State would utilize funds here obtained from BCCI.

“The stadium would soon have an indoor hall to facilitate players to continue their practices during inclement weather. There are plans to have a swimming pool inside the stadium premises and the sitting capacity of the stadium would be enhanced in near future”, said Mr Ashirbad Behera, the OCA secretary.

Behera, who is also the secretary of Orissa Olympic Association (OOA), said although, the stadium belongs to OOA, BBCI has no objection in OCA developing the stadium into a world-class cricket stadium. “BCCI has promised an assistance of Rs. 50 crores to be given in two phases and it would be spent to give a major facelift to the stadium in next two years”, he added.

When asked about the recent media reports about the objection raised by BCCI of not allotting international matches to the associations that do not have their own stadiums, Behera refuted the reports saying there is no base in such reports.

“BCCI has already indicated that the Cuttack venue would be included in the tour itinerary of the visiting South Africa cricket team in March next year. But the date has not been finalized yet”, the OCA secretary said.

The stadium has floodlight facilities, a state-of-art multi-gym and press box.

“We are planning to extend the sitting capacity of the stadium from the present 30,000 to 50, 000 with the help of BCCI assistance. The pavilion and two of its galleries would be further expanded to accommodate more spectators”, Behera said.
