KOCHI: The Indian Coast Guard has set high standards in cooperating with other agencies and forces for search and rescue, pollution response and the drive against smuggling, narcotics, poaching and terrorism along the seas, Defence Minister A.K. Antony said on Friday. Speaking after presenting medals to Coast Guard personnel, in Kochi on Friday, he said that no single agency, however strong it may be, can undertake all tasks on its own. “Neither adverse weather nor shortage of manpower has come in the way of the Coast Guard in carrying out its duties. The force is a reassuring presence for fishermen who venture into the sea. There is a proposal to induct a dredger-cum-pollution-response vessel, which can perform dual roles, for the Coast Guard,” he said. Mr. Antony was received at the parade by Vice-Admiral R.F. Contractor, Director-General of the Indian Coast Guard. The Minister inspected a 50-men ceremonial Guard of Honour. Inspector-General A. Rajasekhar, Commander of the Coast Guard Western Region too was present. Mr. Antony presented two President’s Tatrakshak Medals, one to Inspector-General Rajendra Singh for distinguished service and the other to Commandant Ganti Mahapatra Sreenivas for gallantry.
