Stern action: GHMC workers dismantling illegal constructions at Shanti Shikara Apartments in Hyderabad on Friday. -- HYDERABAD: In one of the major demolition drives in the twin cities, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) authorities demolished 13 flats and 72 commercial establishments in the cellars of Shanti Shikara apartments on Friday. A huge contingent of municipal authorities assisted by the police carried out the demolition, even as tempers ran high among shop-keepers trying to protest. The demolitions were taken up following a writ petition filed by the Shanti Shikara Apartments Welfare Association in the High Court against the conversion of cellar space into commercial space. The GHMC was asked to take up the demolition and report to the court before November 5. Mild tension prevailed at Santi Shikara apartments after the authorities left the place, as some shop-keepers tried to pick up arguments with the welfare association members. Some shop-keepers were reported to have gone to the apartments of the association leaders and tried to argue with them. They withdrew after the police intervened.
