‘Molecular engineering, genomics are exciting frontiers in diagnostics’

International Medical Sciences Academy meet begins

Manipal: Jagadishan, president of International Medical Sciences Academy (IMSA), said on Friday that modern technology would make individualised assessment of medical problems, taking into account, genomic and proteomic variation of each unique person possible.

He was presiding over the International Medical Sciences Academy Conference “IMSACON 2007” here. The theme of the meet is “Frontiers of Medicine in 21st Century”.

Mr. Jagadishan said that molecular engineering for designing and targeting drugs, genomics, proteomics, gene chips, and scanners, were exciting frontiers in diagnostics and therapeutics. Optimising the use of these advances and balancing it with the need to provide medical care was the future option. “New drugs, new drug delivery systems, and science fiction such as surgery from within, are promises which are to come true. Hopefully mankind will have the wisdom to put to good use all the visions of this great frontier,” he said.

Imaging sciences and interventional procedures had made new breakthroughs. Anatomical and functional details were now available with amazing clarity. Interventional procedures had given pinhole access to treat complex problems. “As the excitement of technology grows, costs also escalate. Judicious use and good economic practices need to be perpetuated to make these modern miracles available to all who are in need of them,” he said.
