HYDERABAD: The Transport Department evoked good response from auto drivers on Friday with over 6,000 drivers coming forward to install digital meters replacing mechanical devices. This was after the department organised a demonstration at the office of Regional Transport Authority (RTA) in Malakpet where digital meters were fixed to ten autos on an experimental basis on Thursday. “Going by auto drivers’ response, we can assume that others will agree to install digital meters,” Joint Transport Commissioner C. L. N. Gandhi said. A meeting with eight approved manufacturers was conducted in the chambers of Transport Commissioner Poonam Malakondaiah in which they expressed consent to sell digital meters for Rs.1,500 (fibre-made) and Rs.1,700 (aluminium-made) with one year warranty. The Commissioner informed the manufacturers that a single window delivery system would be adopted wherein the suppliers and officials of Legal Metrology and Transport Departments would be available at one place to help auto drivers purchase a meter and get it certified along with a seal. The date will be announced soon. Officials also took strong objection to high-handed behaviour of auto drivers who damaged auto-rickshaws for installing digital meters. They said stern action would be initiated against such drivers. Dharnas stagedOn the fourth-day of strike, the drivers organised dharnas at RTA offices in Malakpet and Trimulgherry demanding cancellation of orders making digital meters mandatory. Meanwhile, the city region of APSRTC in the back drop of auto strike operated 1, 464 special buses to different railway stations in the twin cities. While, 450 buses were operated to Nampally railway station, 140 and 874 special buses were operated to Kacheguda and Secunderabad railway stations respectively. Over 1,38, 304 commuters utilised these special buses, said a press release here on Friday.
