Beware of trouble-makers in the midst of shoppers Law and order

The elaborate security arrangements made by the police notwithstanding, shoppers need to stay alert against criminals,

says L. Srikrishna.

With just a few days to go for Deepavali, all roads lead to the busy and bustling T.Nagar. Apart from the regular shoppers, people from neighbouring districts are visiting the popular shopping hub in the city for purchasing a host of items from textiles, jewelleries to sweets.

On their part, police say elaborate arrangements have been made to hand le the rush and to ensure no untoward incident. Recently, traffic police made a few roads in the area one-way and banned autorickshaws from entering certain parts of T. Nagar. Vehicle parking lots and areas exclusively for pedestrians have been demarcated.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (T.Nagar) S. Lakshmi said that about 500 police personnel would be on duty round the clock in different parts of T.Nagar. They would be assisted by the Tamil Nadu Special Police (TSP) and personnel of the Swift Action Group till Deepavali eve.

To keep a check on pocket-pickers and bag-lifters, police personnel in plainclothes mingle with the shopping crowd looking around for habitual offenders.

The personnel have images of known offenders with them. Photographs of criminals have also been displayed at various places, Ms Lakshmi said.

She said police watch towers had been erected and six cameras placed at key spots to monitor the movements of pedestrians. Over the last few days, the police have received about 20 complaints of ‘missing’ cases, including some concerning children. Alert messages were given over public address system and the cases solved within hours, she said.

Police posted in and around the shopping area also distribute handbills to the shoppers to take adequate care while returning home with their purchases. The shoppers are also asked to be beware of tricksters.

Many commercial establishments have posted private security guards and placed surveillance cameras. But all these measures notwithstanding, it is necessary for the shoppers to stay alert against criminals.
