TAMBARAM: An aged couple in Nanganallur were tricked and robbed of 15 sovereigns of gold jewellery on Tuesday.
According to the Pazhavanthangal Police, Ravi and his wife left for work on Tuesday morning, leaving behind his father Rangachari, aged about 80, and 73-year-old mother at their house in Nanganallur Cooperative Colony.
Around 10 a.m., a man called on the aged couple introducing himself as Raghavan.
He told Mr. Rangachari that he was related to Mr. Ravi’s wife and had come from her native place to visit her. When Mr. Rangachari said that his daughter-in-law had gone for work, the stranger offered to wait till she returned.
The stranger, aged about 60 years, told Mr. Rangachari during a conversation that he was looking for a groom for his daughter and that he was also searching for trendy designs of jewellery and almirahs to store them.
He requested Mr. Rangachari to allow him to have a look at their almirah.
Even as Mr. Rangachari opened the almirah, the stranger asked for a glass of water.
Mr. Rangachari went out of the room to bring water.
Minutes later, the stranger came out of the room and after talking a while to Mr. Rangachari, left the house, saying that he would return in the evening.
When Mr. Rangachari and his wife went inside the room, they found the almirah ransacked and jewellery missing.
The Pazhavanthangal police said that a similar crime was reported from Madipakkam about three years ago.
The victim was a senior citizen and the culprit, an elderly person.
