HYDERABAD: Major surgeries for treatment of certain types of cancer and other ailments could be avoided with the advances made in vascular and interventional radiology, according to S. Rammurti, head, Department of Radiology and Imaging, NIMS.
Dr. Rammurti, who is organising secretary of the four-day on-going Tenth Annual Conference of the Indian Society of Vascular and Interventional Radiology (ISVIR 2007), which will conclude on November 4, said minimally invasive procedures could be carried out through embolisation (intentional blocking of blood vessel) to treat cancers and prevent bleeding in lungs and intestines.
In the case of cancer, the blood vessels of the tumour are blocked.
“This modality of treatment in cancers is done where surgery is not possible and it is fairly effective in 55 per cent of patients,” he added.
The other health conditions which could be treated through minimally invasive procedures were acute paralytic stroke, arterio-venous malformations (in brain, spinal cord, limbs, lungs and liver) and aneuryism.
