REVIEWING SECURITY: Commodore L.V. Sarath Babu, Chief Staff Officer (Operation), Eastern Naval Command, Visakhapatnam, at Naval Detachment, Rameswaram on Friday.
RAMANATHAPURAM: Navy is not planning to extend help to Sri Lankan Navy in its fight against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, according to Commodore L.V. Sarath Babu, Chief Staff Officer (Operation), Eastern Naval Command, Visakhapattinam.
He, however, said there was a perfect coordination between the two Navies and the “professional understanding” with the Island Navy would continue.
Speaking to The Hindu after visiting the Naval Detachment at Rameswaram, Mr. Sarath Babu said a new scheme of security arrangement would be in place soon along the Rameswaram coast to control smuggling activities. Asked about the recent coordinated attack of LTTE on the Anuradhapura air base, he said though the recent incidents were the internal matter of Sri Lanka, the Indian Navy was closely monitoring the situation in the island nation. When asked whether the LTTE capabilities posed a threat to India, Mr. Sarath Babu said there was no need for worry, as the security system of the country was strong. “Our security is in place. Our interest is in place. So there is no worry at this point of time.” He said all security agencies, including police and other civil authorities, along the Rameswaram coast were working well to protect the country’s security. Terming his visit “routine”, the Commodore said the Navy was trying to enhance the infrastructure and organisational set up in the region. Instructions were given to step up vigil along the coast.
