Kolkata: The eighth National Conference of the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) in Kolkata has brought Saleha Sultana, the joint convener of the Bangladeshi Nari Mukti Sangshad (Women’s Liberation Organisation) to the city. The Bangladeshi Nari Mukti Sangshad (BNMS) has a membership of more than 10,000 women working all over the country. On Friday, she spoke to The Hindu on the women’s movement in Bangladesh, Islamic fundamentalism and Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasrin’s exile. “The situation now in Bangladesh is such that we cannot do our work independently, but we are still carrying on,” she said. The impediments are not just social, but administrative too. “The phrase women’s liberation itself makes many men in our country uncomfortable. Besides, the local administration, often not very educated, and having little understanding of politics, make things difficult for us to function,” Ms. Sultana said.
