NEW DELHI: Yuki Bhambri proved his mettle once again and moved smoothly past Hiroki Morya of Japan 7-6(6), 6-0 in the semifinals of the Asia-Oceania ITF junior tennis tournament at the DLTA Complex here on Friday. However, second-seeded Poojashree Venkatesh was unable to tackle the fifth-seeded Yang Zi-Jun Jun of Hong Kong with the same poise that she had shown thus far in the girls’ event and bowed out in straight sets. As the score would suggest, it was an even contest in the first set. Yuki went ahead twice with breaks in the third and seventh games, but the Japanese was equally competent striking parity with successive breaks. Into the tie-break, Yuki was down 0-2, but was a lot sharper than his opponent and thus got to the first setpoint at 6-5. He put a return out to lose that opportunity, but sustained the good work to take the set on the second setpoint. That was good enough to break the resistance of the Japanese lad who failed to win another game, as Yuki cruised to the final of the prestigious event. It will be a tough task for Yuki to match the talented Chinese boy Di Wu who is indeed a champion in the making, despite an unflattering rank of 292. The results (semifinals): Boys: Di Wu (Chn) bt Peerakit Siributwong (Tha) 6-3, 3-2 (retired); Yuki Bhambri bt Hiroki Morya (Jpn) 7-6(6), 6-0. Girls: Noppawan Lertcheewakarn (Tha) bt Aleksandra Kolesnichenko (Uzb) 6-3, 6-4; Yang Zi-Jun Jun (Hkg) bt Poojashree Venkatesh 6-4, 6-2.
