Sotogrande: Gushing wind marred Jeev Milkha Singh’s title defence as he stuttered to a five-over 76 to be tied 34th, while compatriot Jyoti Randhawa put up a better show with his two-over 73 for a share of the 12th place after the opening round of the Volvo Masters here. On a day when the wind grew strong and just four golfers turned in sub-par rounds, Graeme McDowell’s three-under 68 was the best effort. Justin Rose produced a stunning hole-in-one en route to his 70 to occupy the third slot along with Peter O’Malley. Jeev’s opening round was a struggle and the Indian could not manage to sink in a single birdie even though there was no let-up in dropped shots. Though he did not putt badly, Jeev struggled to find the greens and bogeyed the seventh, ninth, 11th, 15th and 18th holes. Chowrasia 17th At Sentosa, S.S.P. Chowrasia hung around for a decent finish with an even-par second round which places him at tied 17th. And Shiv Kapur too came up with an improved round of one-under 70 to leapfrog to tied 24th after the halfway stage of the $4 million Barclays Singapore Open here. Gaurav Ghei (145) carded 73 to slip to tied 45th, while Gurbaaz Mann’s (146) horrendous 76 saw him drop to 52nd, a slot he shares with compatriot Arjun Singh who carded 72. — PTI
