Not justified

Every cricketer will agree that dropping Rahul Dravid from the team cannot be justified. If performance was the criterian then Suresh Raina, who was the ‘man of the series’ in the recent Challenger Trophy tournament, Dinesh Karthik, the only century-maker in that tournament and S. Badrinath for his consistency, should have found a place. Instead Rohit Sharma and Virender Sehwag have been chosen. Dravid has a better record than Sehwag. There is more to it than meets the eye.

Better treatment

Rahul Dravid is undergoing a stressful time indeed. We know the worth of Dravid, considered the Great Wall of Indian cricket. Twice against the Aussies, he was wrongly given out. We have to learn from the Aussies who give enough time for the big players to return to form. Dravid is a quality player and needs to be given a better deal.

The Australian challenge

Stuart Clark’s pre-series remark that the Indians are in for a whitewash should be taken up as a challenge and met with the right combination of spin and attacking batsmanship. India has the right kind of players to win the Test series, but what is needed is proper selection that will have the experience of Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly and V.V.S. Laxman in full measure.

Sachin and Inzy

There is no doubt that Sachin Tendulkar is a shade better as a batsman than the Pakistani giant Inzamam-ul-Haq. But then for sheer effectiveness, Inzy had been a great asset for Pakistan. He has with his batting flair and singleminded approach helped his country win or draw Test matches which Tendulkar has not done. The debate on who is the greater of the two can never cease.

Where was Milkha?

The Military World Games was undoubtedly a great success. The SSCB found in Andhra Pradesh Government a fitting patron. Both deserve hearty congratulations. The Services over the years had been a major contributor to Indian sports. None reflected the honour more than the ‘Flying Sikh’ Milkha, whose exploits in the Olympic arena is well known. Under the circumstances it was a surprise that Milkha was not associated with the MWG in Hyderabad. Why was he missing?
