KOLKATA: A new-look Hyderabad Ranji side, without its captain V.V.S. Laxman, arrived here on Friday for its opening game of the Super League beginning at the Eden Gardens on Sunday. The team, drawing much of the talent from its under-22 side, will heavily depend on Laxman, a proven performer in domestic cricket, against Bengal. The home side, also depleted by the exodus of some of the seniors to the Indian Cricket League (ICL), is trying to reconstruct the side under coach Bharat Arun. The visiting team went to the Jadavpur University Salt Lake campus for practice but found the venue unfit. — Special Correspondent Selection trialsSelection trials will be held at the Osmania University cricket grounds in Hyderabad on November 7 to pick its men’s cricket team for the South Zone and all-India inter-varsity competitions. Interested may contact G. Manohar Reddy, coach, with eligibility form and performance record at the above venue at 2 p.m. Ban columns: BoycottFormer England captain Geoffrey Boycott (In London) has called for a ban on syndicated newspaper columns written by current cricketers as the write-ups give them a chance to “spill the beans on what goes on in the dressing room”. Boycott said there should be a strict policy on the matter as they earn enough and do not need to write such columns for dailies.
