Chasing the winged beauties

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Come November 11, bird lovers will ‘race’ across Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode trying to spot and identify as many species of birds as possible.

The HSBC India Bird Race is being organised that day by KeralaBirder, an Internet group of bird lovers, and the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) on the eve of the birth anniversary of Salim Ali, the ‘bird man’ of India.

The organisers say this event will be the first of its kind in the State.

Bird watchers from several organisations, such as the Kottayam Nature Society; the Malabar Nature History Society; the Warblers and Waders; the Nature Educational Society, Thrissur; and Thanal, involved in bird conservation measures will support the conduct of the ‘bird race.’

During the dawn-to-dusk race, up-and-coming bird watchers will rub shoulders with veterans. The novices will learn a point or two about the finer aspects of bird watching, a press note from the organisers here said. After the race, the bird lovers will meet over dinner to share their experiences.
