Sprint queen P.T. Usha has her fan base intact

They were not even born when she used to set the tracks on fire, but the large number of schoolchildren who came to watch the The Hindu Young World Quiz ‘07 at the Tagore Centenary Hall in Kozhikode on Saturday mobbed P.T. Usha, requesting her for autographs. She had arrived shortly after the finals — there was a preliminary round earlier in the day — got under way and was cheered loudly as she made her way to the front row inside a nea rly packed hall.

“It makes me extremely happy when the young children come up to me at functions like this,” said Usha, who was the chief guest of the programme. “They make me feel special.”

She sat through the whole show. “And I enjoyed every bit of it,” said the greatest track-and-field athlete India has ever produced.
